Stainless steel 321 is considered as one of the stabilized austenitic that is similar to stainless steel 304. Only difference is that it has five times more titanium addition than its carbon contents which reduces carbide while welding process. Stainless steel 321 pipe fittings are resistant to intergranular corrosion once heated within the carbide precipitation. Due to titanium stainless steel 321 does not participate well in welding. hardening can only be done by cold working due to titanium. Stainless steel grade 321 cannot be recommended for decorative purpose as it doesn’t polish well. It is used on a large scale in spiral welded tube for burner pipes as well as flues, heat exchangers, bellows, woven or welded screens for high temperature mineral processing, heating element tubing etc.
Stainless steel 321H is also considered as higher carbon variant of stainless steel 321. To resist intergranular corrosion stainless steel 321H is stabilized using niobium as an addition, also stainless steel 321H pipe fittings are able to withstand higher temperature than stainless steel 321. Better resistance against creep can be seen in stainless steel 321H variant. SS 321H shows better resistance to acid corrosion in various temperatures. Normally it is used for piston engine manifolds, expansion joints, polythionic acid service, thermal oxidizers, waste treatment, pharmaceutical production, food processing, aerospace etc. SS 321H can be compared with SS 304 in terms of corrosion resistance. At moderate temperature it can also be used in most dilute organic acids and at lower temperature it can be used in pure phosphoric acid and at elevated temperatures up to 10% diluted solutions. Due to their similar characteristics stainless steel 312 and stainless steel 312H are dually certified in some cases. As stainless sell 321H has excellent resistance capacity it is considered as most preferable grade in market.
